They married in 1902 in Butte, Montana. They divorced between 1910 and 1918.

They had 2 children, Jesse and Maxine (1904, Montana-February 2, 1994).

On April 23, 1942 in Tacoma, Washington, he married Carol F. Lewis (December 30, 1910, Colorado-December

29, 1995, Los Angeles), also photographer (

).

They had 2 children Will J. (March 3, 1947, New York) and Carol Kathryn (born in February 1950, Los Angeles).

After opening his own structural engineering firm in Seattle, he developed new tools to photograph in difficult situations. He developed a a type of electric eye to photograph the atomic bomb test at Yucca Flat, Nevada, in

). Underwater photograph work with Otis Barton involved making a camera enclosure suitable for photographing the depths. He also utilized a concave mirror to photograph the aurora borealis. He covered World War II for Life magazine he integrated in 1942, on European and Pacific fronts.
He left Life magazine in 1961 to work for Time, National Geographic and several medical magazines.
