Story

He started as photographer for the San Francisco Examiner.

He belonged to the team of Life magazine from 1943 to 1946, and covered the Second World War in Europe 

(,).

Then he became director by watching the directors he used to take in pictures working.

He directed great movies and more than 300 TV shows, receiving an Emmy Award in 1974 for "Afterschool Special" on ABC-TV.

On April 30, 1939 he married Evelyn Barnes in San Francisco.

They had 3 children : Gwendolyn Joy (1939, California-June 18, 2014, Las Vegas)(), Melanie (born in 1947, Japan) and Johnny Dana (June 2, 1950, California-July 1973). 

They divorced in 1954.

In 1955 he married Marjorie "Marjie" Millar (August 10, 1930, Washington-April 16, 1966)(). 
They divorced in 1958. 

On December 20, 1968 he married Shirley L. Damery (August 7, 1926, Washington-2020). They divorced in 1971.

His last spouse was Ruth LaFaye Johnson (June 21, 1929, New Mexico-April 19, 2024, California)(). They married in Hawaii on September 26, 1987.
