Her father, E.A.Olson was a train conductor and the Olson family lived in a working-class suburb of Duluth, 2833 West Third Street
She began her career as a young singer in the military band of Duluth, the Duluth Slavation Army Band.
She appeared in plays at her school and sang with a dance orchestra during the holidays.
According to her sister, Joyce Hadley, Dorothy was sure to go in Hollywood one day.
She passed two auditions at the Paramount before she get a contract with the Universals Studios.
Notably she played in the serial 'The Phantom of the Creep" with Bela Lugosi (1939) and in "House of Fear"
She met Joe DiMaggio in 1937, during the shooting of the movie "Manhattan-Merry-Go-Round" in which she shortly appeared.They got married on November 19, 1939 at the St Peter and Paul Catholic Church in San Francisco.
With her third husband, Ralph Peckovich, they headed a posh club in Palm Springs, the Charcoal Charley's, where she sometimes performed.
