Married to Esther Goldstein, on  December 21st 1933 (divorced on June 11th 1964). They had 3 sons, Michael, Alan and Lon.

He belonged to the Arts, Sciences and Professions Council (a Communist association).

He taught at the People's Eductaion Center and kept a predominant activity within the Arts, Sciences and Professions Council.

In 1947 he was one of the main intervenants at the Thought Control Conference of the Council, in Los Angeles.

Neither him nor his wife haden't hidden their political commitment.

Dr Greenson recommended Dr Engelberg to Marilyn in 1960, shortly after their first meeting. The same year, Dr Engelberg supervised Marilyn's hospitalization on the set of "The Misfits".

He treated her for the viral infection which prevented her from keeping her promises on the set of "Something's Got to Give » in 1962.

He was Marilyn's GP and was responsible oof many sedatives prescriptions. During the 6 months before her death, she saw him 29 times.

Many biographers clamied that Dr Engelberg gave Marilyn some injections on August 1st and 3rd 1962, either sedatives or a would-be youth serum, but the needles marks (which must have been seen on Marilyn's body) aren't mentionned in the official autopsy report.

He had a close relationship with Dr Greenson who called him on phone and sent him at Marilyn's (she had given him the keys of her home) to give her some sedatves and other drugs.

On Friday, August 3rd 1962, he wrote a prescription of 25 capsules of Nembutal, that Marilyn bought at the San Vicente Pharmacy, Brentwood.

On Saturday, August 4th 1962, he would have been approached twice by Dr Greenson to go and give Marilyn some sedatives. But because of personal problems (at that time he was splitting up with his wife), he couldn't  see Marilyn. Later, Dr Greenson called him once more. This time Engelberg himself called the police from Marilyn's house and announced her death on August 5th 1962, at 3.40 AM.
