ERWITT Elliott

 

Born Elio Romano Ervitz.

Date of birth : July 26, 1928, Paris, France.

 

Profession photographer at the Magnum agency.

Story

Born in Paris, he spent his childhood in Milan, Italy.

His parents were born in Russia. His father Boris Ervitz (born in 1896)() and his mother

Jeanette (born Eugenia Pikovsky in 1900)(), divorced in 1941. Elliott followed his father to New York 

(), Los Angeles then to Nouvelle-Orleans.

The family emigrated to the USA in 1939 (--).

He studied photography and filmmaking at the Los Angeles City College, then at the New School for Social Research in New York, in 1948. He finished his studies in 1950.

In 1952 he was drafted to the Army and discharged in 1953. He served as a photogtrapher's assistant in France and Germany, where he was stationed.

He joined the Magnum agency in 1953 and worked a a free-lance phothgrapher for magazines such as Collier's, Look, Life, Holiday.

At the end of 1960s, he was the president of the Magnum Agency for 3 years.

He was probably the one who took the best picture; it depicts Marilyn sitting between Clark Gable and Montgomery Clift; behind them, are standing John Huston, Eli Wallach, Frank Taylor and Arthur Miller.
