Practise: conductor and clarinet player, he was one of the most popular jazzmen of his era.
He was nicknamed "king if swing".

Story:

His parents, immigrants from Russia, settled in Chicago where he spent his childhood.

In 1948 when the Columbia (immediately after the Fox) decided not to renew her contract, Marilyn had, without success, an audition to join the Benny Goodman Band.
