HOPPER Hedda

Elda FURRY.

Date of birth : May 21nd 1890, Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania.

Date of death : February 1st 1966, Hollywood, California.

 

Practise: very influential reporter, specialized in the Hollywood gossip.

 

Place of living: 1708 Tropical Avenue :.

 

Story

She was first an actress in silent movies (,), before becoming a reporter :.

 

She knew Helen Ainsworth. She had an eye on Marilyn, even before she signed her first contract with the Fox.

 

Her article from  July 29th 1946, creating an emulation, rushed the studios to make a decision : "Howard Hughes is improving. Picking up a magazine, his attention was attracted by the girl on the cover, and he immediately ordered to offer her some movies. Her name is Norma Jeane Dougherty and she works as a model".

According to Fred Lawrence Guiles, neither Hedda Hopper, nor Howard Hughes had been informed about the publication of this article; Emmeline Snively had passed this paper from her own initiative.

 
She wrote many articles about the cinema for the press agencies.
 

In 1953, she attended the prizegiving of the "New Faces Award" to Marilyn, from the The Detroit Free Press magazine:

On April 26th 1955, she attended the Newspaper Public Convention (or Banshee Luncheon) at the Waldorf Astoria :

Hedda Hopper was an ardent anticommunist and flaid those who didn't cooperate with the House Un-American Activities Commitee (HUAC), and acclaimed the others.

Letter to Marilyn dated November 5th 1959 :.

Later, Marilyn hold it against her for having disclosed her affair with Yves Montand in 1960,  a secret that Montand had unwisely confided to her.
