Story

American native to Austria.

Uncontested master of the expressionist silent films.

His most famous movies are "Métropolis" (1926), "M" (1931).

He arrived in Hollywood in 1934, after a long career in German cinema.

He was interested in reflection about social things, particularly those emotionally unstable or socially alienated.

His movies in the USA, "Fury", "You Only Live Once", "Scarlet Street", "The Big Heat", "Rancho Notorious", mostly concerned losers or unfairness victims.

1952 : he directed Marilyn in "Clash By Night" :

,,.

When he arrived on the set of  "Clash By Night", he exactly knew what he wanted from his actors.

Their collaboration was hard. Marilyn was terrified by her partner Barbara Stanwyck, and convinced that another actor, Paul Douglas, hated her.

On the set, she had imposed Natasha Lytess. Lang, who didn't bear the way this one repeated what he said, quickly dismissed her; but, like the others, he was forced, if he wanted to keep Marilyn, to call the teacher back.
