NEGULESCO Jean

Born Ioan Negulescu.

Date of birth : February 26, 1900, Craiova, Romania.

Date of death : July 18, 1993, Marbella, Spain.

Practise: first set painter, he took the step until becoming a director.

 

Story

Native to Romania, he emigrated to the USA in 1927.

He first worked for the Warner where he directed "The Mask of Dimitrios" (1944) and "Humoresque" (1947).

Then he worked at the Fox; his most famous movies are : "Road House" (1948), "Johnny Belinda" (1948),"Three Coins in the Fountain" (1954), "Woman's World" (1954), "Daddy Long Legs" (1955).

In 1952 he was chosen by the Fox to direct the first Cinemascope movie "How to Marry a Millionaire?". 
For this glamorous project, supposed to supplant the television, the studio casted its three main stars : Lauren Bacall, Betty Grable and Marilyn.

In 1953, he was director, besides Otto Preminger, of "River of No Return", but uncredited :,

He belonged to the small group of directors who refused to publicly comment the issues with Marilyn during a shooting.

Despite the huge success of "How to Marry a Millionaire?", Marilyn and him didn't work together again.

They should have meet again on the shooting of "Something's Got to Give", where he had to replace George Cukor to end the movie.
