He was awarded with the Pulitzer prize.

He wrote a biography of Abraham Lincoln in six volumes, which is authoritative.

On June 15, 1908 he married in Milwaukee Lilian Steichen (May 1st, 1883, Michigan-February 18, 1977, North

Carolina )(,,).

They had 3 daughters : Margaret (June 3, 1911, Wisconsin-April 12, 1997)(), Janet (June 27,1916,

Illinois-February 16, 2011, North Carolina)() and Mary Ellen "Helga" (November 24, 1918, Illinois-Janauary 28, 2014, Ohio).

Link with Marilyn

He met Marilyn on the set of "Some Like it Hot" (1959).
 

She liked to meet him since she had read his Lincoln biography Arthur Miller had recommended her during their first meeting, at the beginning of the 50's.

 
After her come back in New York, Marilyn saw him again 2 or 3 times, then they kept their friendship alive through the telephone.


She owned a bust of Sandburg she took with her after her break-up with Miller .

 

In December 1961, he was in Los Angeles to work on the screenplay of "The Greatest Story ever Told" with the director George Stevens. During her stay, he met Marilyn; this meeting was immortalized by the photographer Arnold Newman at his own home

Joe DiMaggio asked him to read Marilyn's eulogy during her funeral; he refused because he was too sick for that, but it's also asserted that he thought he didn't know her enough to do it. This honor accrued to Lee Strasberg.
