Story:

He met Arthur Miller at the time when Mary Grace Slattery, Miller's first wife, was his secretary in the New York publishing firm, Reynal et Hitchcock.

In 1945, he published "Focus", a novel of Arthur Miller, to who he was for many years, a close friend.

In 1948, he temporarily left the edition circle to produce movies at the MGM, with Dore Schary. He went back to edition in New York, in 1952.

With his wife Nancy ("Nan") and their 4 sons, they often visited Marilyn and Arthur in their house of Roxbury.

Sometimes, 2 of their sons, Mike and Curtis, stayed at Miller's home; it happened when Arthur's children, Jane and Robert were also present.

He accompanied Marilyn when she went to Los Angeles for Nikita Khrouchtchev's visit at the Fox, on September 19, 1959.

During Summer 1958, Arthur Miller asked him what he thought about the first draft of his screenplay of  "The Misfits"; he thought that John Huston would be an ideal director, and showed his enthusiasm by agreeing, on Marilyn's offer, to leave his position of publishing director at Dell and to produce the movie.

Few years earlier, he had worked for a while in Hollywood and had produced "Mystery Street" (1950).

So he was in charge of the production of "The Misfits".

On July 20, 1960, he was present when Marilyn arrived in Reno, for the shooting of "The Misfits" :

,

During the shooting, he was in an uncomfortable situation : he had to prevent the production from going down the drain, despite theinternecine quarrels in which the shooting dragged on.
