KIRKLAND Douglas

 

Date of birth : August 16, 1934, Toronto (Canada).

 

Profession photographer.

He worked as photographer in a studio, in Niagara Falls, where he made passport pictures and wedding pictures.


Among his affectations appeared some essays about Greece and Lebanon, and also reportings about fashion and celebrities.


He made a picture session with Marilyn for the special 25th birthday issue of Look magazine (,

,,).

He was aged only 26 and had only one year experience as a free lance photographer for luxury magazines.

During the session which took place on November 17, 1961, Marilyn asked the assistants to get out of the room, in order to stay alone with him : "I think I should be alone with this guy. I think that his work would only be better" said Marilyn.

From 1961 to 1972, he worked as a free-lance photographer for many magazines as Life, Look, Paris-Match, Stern, Town and country.

He continued his career, taking pictures of, among others, Liz Taylor, Marlène Dietrich.

Later, he worked more and more on movie sets, among them "2001 : A Space Odyssey", "The Name of the Rose", and "Titanic".

 
His photographical work was published in 1989, "Light Years" with celebrities, then in 1993 "Icons : Creativity with Camera and Computer", for which, among others, Robert Redford, Dustin Hoffman, Kim Basinger, Robert De Niro posed.

In 1997, 4 new books of Kirkland were published, including the "James Cameron's Titanic" » which was a best seller.

 
He received several prizes for his work which was exhibited in a gallery in Milan (Carla Sozzani) then in Florida  (Fotofusion). He was named "Mentor of the Year" by Fotofusion and would be "Photographer of the Year" for the American photographical developers.

 
His affectations have led him on every continent to work on subjects as various as the astronomy in Chile, the railways in Siberia and fashion in Bali.

Among his models : Coco Chanel, Pierre Cardin, Katherine Hepburn, Charlie Chaplin, Judy Garland, Orson Welles, John Wayne, Faye Dunaway, Sophia Lauren, Barbra Streisand, Lie De Gong, Pierce Brosnan.
