His father William Brooks Clift (December 18, 1886, Tennessee-February 24, 1964, New York)(
) was the vice-president of the Omaha National Trust Company.
Hisr mother Ethel Anderson Fogg (September 29, 1888, Philadelphia-June 27, 1988, Texas)(
) filled both parental roles while her husband was busy at work.
They had 3 children : William Brooks Jr (February 4, 1919, Nebraska-September 22, 1986, Los Angeles)

The mother travelled a lot with her children, for long trips in Europe. Tutors traveled with the family for their instruction. They also had a secondary residence in Bermuda.
After the 1929 crisis, the family changed its way of life and settled in Saratoga, Florida, in 1933

Monty joined the local youth theatrical club and played in "As Husbands Go". His mother pushed him on the acting way.
The family then moved to Sharon, Massachussetts, where he auditionned for a role in the Broadway play "Fly
Away Home". He was cast and the play ran for 2 seasons (

In 1935 he played in Broadway in "Jubilee"

His family came back and settled in Manhattan and he played in "Dame Nature" (

). This part earned him Broadway star status, only aged 17.
