After Marilyn's death, a Jean Smith thank-you letter was found in her personal staff, probably written after her father, Joe Kennedy, stroke in December 1961 

"Dear Marilyn,

Mother asked me to write to you to thank you for your charming letter for Daddy. He has been very touched and it was very kind of you to send it. I think I understand that Bobby and you are together!

We all think that you should come with him when he will be back on the East Coast! Again thank you for the letter.
