He learned his job in Broadway before going to Hollywood.

During his 51 years career, he established himself with a reputation of a sensitive and cultured director.

Know for his abilities to direct some "difficult" actresses (Katharine Hepburn, Constance Bennett, Vivien Leigh, Ingrid Bergman, Ava Gardner, Sophia Loren, Judy Garland), he managed to work well with each of them; but his collaboration with Marilyn in "Let's Make Love" was disappointing and disastrous in "Something's Got to Give".

He belonged to the list of Marilyn favourite directors that she gave to the Fox Studios in 1955. At that time she hadn't worked yet with him but was impressed by his reputation.

On the shooting of "Something's Got to Give", Marilyn's confidence in Cukor quickly failed, because they didn't agree about the script changes, and above all, Cukor didn't put up with her endless delays. The Fox replaced him by Jean Negulesco, before they fired Marilyn and stopped the shooting.

He received an Academy Award for "My Fair Lady" (1964) () and was nominated 4 times for "Little

Women" (1933)(),"The Philadelphia Story" (1940),"Othello" (1947), "Born Yesterday" (1950).
