Coming from an Irish immigrants family.

He worked in New York City where he designed the images of the silent movies credits, and designed costumes for Ethel Barrymore, Katharine Hepburn and for the revues"George White's Scandals".

In Hollywood, her friend Cary Grant recommended him to the Warner Brothers, where he worked as chief

costume designer for 11 years (;;).

Then he went to work at the Fox, Universal, RKO and MGM, then went back to the Warner, to exclusively work at the costumes creation for the Bette Davis movies.

 
He won the Best Costume Design Academy Award for "An American in Paris" (MGM, 1951), "Les Girls" (MGM,

1957) and "Some Like it Hot" (1959)(,).
