Story
Her parents were Jewish immigrants from Russia; her father, William (Velvet Sklarski) who was a rabbi and her mother Bessie Cohen (Bosya Laschiner) had 9 children.She began to study photography in 1946 in New York City, then from 1947 to 1948 with Alexei Brodovitch (art
director of Harper's Bazaar) at the New York City's New School for Social Research.
She was the first woman photographer of the Magnum agency in 1951, before becoming a permanent member in 1955.
In the United States, she performed several reporting about women who
belonged to the most various backgrounds, and to who she wanted to give
a real image, "non retouched". It was in this context that the
pictures of Marlene Dietrich and Marilyn Monroe appeared.

York City, and
She lived in the United States in the 50's and left to live in England in 1962.

Eve Arnold made her first photo exhibition about her work in China at the Brooklyn Museum in 1980.
The same year she received the National Book Award for her book about
China, and the Lifetime Achievment Award from the American Society of
Magazine Photographers.
In 1995, she was elected
the "Master Photographer" (the most prestigious of the world
dinstinctions in photography) by the Royal Photographic Society,which
was given to her at the New York's International Center of Photography.
In 1986 she won the Kraszna-Krausz Book Award for her book "In Retrospect".
In 1987, she received the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Science from St Andrew University in Scoltland, the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Letters frome de Staffordshire University, and also the Doctor of Humanities from Richmont, the International American University in London.In 2003, she was honored with the Order of the British Empire from the British Government.
