Story

During his youth, he wrote about movies and theater in a local newspaper. He soon got a job in a radio station, interviewing the stars who passed through Rochester.

He graduated from Marquette University.

In 1953 he married June Alicia Reimer (June 27, 1928, New Jersey-September 27, 2013, California), an actress and

singer known under the name of Monica Lane (,,).

They had 3 children, Gary, Alicia and Cynthia.

In the late 1940's, he became publicist à RKO; that's where he met Marilyn, in 1952, where she was shooting "Clash by Night" (1952).

He then joined at the 20th Century-Fox at the beginning of the 50's.

He left the Fox and joined the public relations agency of Arthur Jacobs who managed Marilyn's business from 1955 until her death. He worked at the New York office of the agency.

Pat Newcomb, employee of the agency, becoming more Marilyn's private secretary than her press agent, in the strict sense of the word, Springer was personally in charge of Marilyn's interviews during the last years of her life.

On March 5, 1961, he accompanied her when she left the Columbia Presbyterian Hospital, in New York

On March 13, 1961, he attended, with her, a party to the benefit of the Actors Studio at the Roseland Dance

On July 11, 1961, he accompanied Marilyn who left the Polyclinic Hospital after her gallblader surgery   

,

 

Springer organized the famous interview of Marilyn with Richard Meryman, the Life magazine reporter. They had met, all the three, during Marilyn's last stay in New York, at the Savoy Plaza Hotel.

He left the Arthur Jacobs agency and opened his own firm, John Springer Associates Inc., through which he

represented many artists (,). Based in New York, the firm has offices in Los Angeles, Paris, London, Rome and Madrid.

In 1971 he received the By-Line Award of the Marquette University College of Journalism.

His private collection of more 100 000 film and stage still photos was merged at the beginning of the 1970' with Bettman Archives, and became the Springer/Bettman Film Collection.
